Microsoft Cuts 4,800 Jobs and Resets Xbox as July's Layoff Tally Opens
Two new cuts this week, four studios cut loose from Xbox, and a look at who is hiring back the people AI was supposed to replace.
July 2026 so far (through July 7): 2 companies with freshly announced cuts, about 4,835 people total. Microsoft (4,800) and Yield Guild Games (35). Two more WARN filings took effect this week for cuts announced back in May: Streamland Media (71, Los Angeles) and Amazon (57, Washington state). For context, tech employers announced 139,156 U.S. job cuts through the first half of 2026, up 83% from the same period last year, per Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Microsoft: 4,800 cut, Xbox loses a fifth of its staff, four studios spun off
Microsoft eliminated 4,800 jobs on Monday, July 6, about 2.1% of its roughly 220,000-person global workforce, according to The Verge and CNBC. Commercial sales and consulting took the biggest hit outside gaming; roles cut spanned software engineering, product management, sales strategy, data science and game design, per GeekWire.
Xbox absorbed the largest single piece: 1,600 roles gone immediately, with CEO Asha Sharma telling staff in a memo posted to Xbox Wire that the division will cut about 3,200 people, roughly 20%, over Microsoft's 2027 fiscal year. Four studios are leaving Xbox: Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions go independent and keep their IP; Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have "entered terms to join new ownership." Arkane's French studio is in mandatory works-council consultation over its future, unresolved as of this writing.
Stated reason: Sharma told staff Xbox studios were "operating at margins that are 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses" and that in a typical year the division "lost 64 cents for every dollar we invested." Chief People Officer Amy Coleman told employees the cuts reflect a "changing technology industry," and was explicit that "the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI," while adding "AI is changing how work gets done."
Plausible real mechanism: Microsoft stock is down about 19-23% over the first half of 2026, its worst first-half performance since 2022, wiping out roughly $1.2 trillion in market value over nine months, per CNBC. That's happening while Microsoft ramps record AI infrastructure spending and just launched a $2.5 billion "Frontier Company" unit built around 6,000 engineers doing AI deployment work for customers, per GeekWire. Wall Street pressure to hold the line on opex, a structurally unprofitable Xbox studio portfolio, and a reallocation toward AI delivery roles all point the same direction: this is cost discipline funding a strategic pivot, dressed as reorganization rather than AI substitution.
Severance: Microsoft has not published exact terms for this round. Its standard involuntary-layoff formula in recent U.S. rounds has been about 12 weeks of base pay plus 2 weeks per year of service, with COBRA-based healthcare continuation and limited stock-vesting acceleration, according to severance-tracking sites SimpleSeverance and reporting on prior rounds; Microsoft has not confirmed these figures for the July 6 cuts specifically. That's separate from the more generous voluntary retirement program (up to 39 weeks pay, five years of healthcare access) that ran earlier this year and reduced the size of Monday's involuntary round, per GeekWire.
This is the software giant's second workforce action this fiscal year after offering buyouts to about 8,750 eligible U.S. employees in April; roughly 30% accepted, which Coleman said reduced the scale of this week's cuts.
Yield Guild Games: 35 cut as crypto gaming arm shuts down
Yield Guild Games, the blockchain gaming organization, announced Monday, July 6 it is shutting down its crypto game publishing arm, YGG Play, cutting 35 jobs in the process, per Decrypt. The unit's website, launchpad and games including LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper retire by August 1; two titles continue under their original developers.
Stated reason: the crypto market downturn made the publishing business "commercially unsustainable."
Plausible real mechanism: this is a pivot, not just a retreat. YGG says it will redirect resources toward supplying gaming-derived behavioral data for AI training, wagering that player decision-making has value to AI developers. The company reported a $20.6 million treasury as of Q1, which it says now stretches to about four years of runway post-restructuring, a small crypto-native firm reallocating scarce capital toward the AI trend rather than funding a business the broader market has stopped rewarding.
Severance: the company says it will pay 8 additional weeks to affected staff during the transition and help them find new roles, per a founder post cited by Decrypt.
Briefs: WARN filings taking effect this week
Two smaller items surfaced this week through filings rather than new announcements, worth a line each so the tally stays honest:
- Streamland Media (Hollywood post-production, Picture Shop/Formosa Group): a California WARN filing shows 71 Los Angeles roles becoming effective July 6. The notice was actually filed back on May 6, so this is an execution date, not new news.
- Amazon, Washington state: a filing made public July 6 disclosed 57 jobs cut across software engineering, product and risk roles in Seattle and Bellevue, plus remote staff. Employees were notified in May and early June; the roles end in August. Amazon says these came from several small, unrelated team changes rather than one action, per GeekWire. It follows Amazon's roughly 30,000 job cuts over the past year, the largest workforce reduction in the company's history.
- TikTok confirmed layoffs across its Trust and Safety team in Singapore, plus cuts in Indonesia and Malaysia, all on July 1, and is weighing roughly 300 cuts in Dublin concentrated in AI data services and QA work, per Startup Fortune. The company says automated systems already handle 85% of content-moderation removals. Notably, TikTok is simultaneously hiring hundreds of new specialist roles in Dublin even as it cuts others there: not a shrinking function, a reshaped one, with manual reviewers losing jobs and the engineers who build the automation gaining them.
Hiring counter-signal: who's absorbing the talent
Not every laid-off tech worker is stuck. Three patterns worth tracking:
Cloud is recruiting from the cuts. AWS is actively targeting Meta's laid-off AI staff to fill roughly 160 open roles, with an AWS marketing executive urging staff to reach out directly to displaced Meta employees, per Cryptobriefing. It's a direct read of a competitor's AI playbook as much as a hiring move.
AI-native startups are pitching stability over prestige. Lovable, the $6.6 billion AI coding startup, is publicly courting laid-off staff from Meta, Microsoft and Google, planning to add hundreds of roles across sales, product and engineering this year, per Aitoolsbee.
Some companies are quietly rehiring the people AI was supposed to replace. A Robert Half survey of nearly 2,000 U.S. hiring managers found 32% eliminated a role because of AI and later rehired for the same position; Forrester expects roughly half of AI-attributed layoffs to reverse, though often at lower pay or offshore. IBM is tripling entry-level U.S. hiring after its HR chatbot couldn't close the last 6% of cases needing human judgment, and Ford rehired 350 veteran engineers after quality problems followed earlier AI-driven cuts. None of this reverses the broader 2026 layoff wave, but it is a live check on how far the AI-substitution story actually holds.
